Weights or Resistance Bands: What's Better?
When it comes to strength training, the debate between using free weights and resistance bands is ongoing. Both are great tools for building muscle and improving overall fitness, but which one may be better for you? Here, Maurice of Dynamic Fitness will break down the benefits of each and help you decide which is the best option for your goals.
Whether you're new to strength training or just looking to switch things up, understanding the difference between weights and resistance bands can help you make the right choice for your training and/or rehab efforts.
Weights: A Classic for Strength Building
Free weights, like dumbbells and barbells, are versatile tools for building strength and muscle mass. They’re great for performing exercises with a wide range of motion, allowing you to lift light or heavy depending on your fitness level.
Some benefits include:
Strength: Free weights can help you increase strength and build muscle mass.
Bone health: Weightlifting is excellent for strengthening bones and reducing the risk of osteoporosis.
Cardio benefits: Lifting weights can improve your cardiovascular fitness, especially when incorporated into circuit training.
Tracking progress: Free weights make it easy to track progress by noting the load, reps, and sets for each exercise, allowing you to see how much stronger you're getting over time.
I like weights, but for many of my clients they are coming out of rehabbing a sports-related or other injury. When we do your initial fitness assessment, I can see how your body and muscles are functioning currently before we pick up any weight.
Why Resistance Band Training
Resistance bands are elastic bands that are typically used for strength training and physical therapy. They come in various levels of resistance, making them a versatile tool for different exercises and fitness levels. (Part of why I love incorporating them into custom fitness plans.) See, instead of relying on gravity like free weights, resistance bands provide constant tension throughout the movement, engaging your muscles in a different way.
I – and my clients – like the fact that these bands can be used to target any muscle group and are popular for people who want a low-impact option for resistance training. They're lightweight, portable, and can be used anywhere, making them an excellent option for home workouts or traveling too.
Do Resistance Bands Build Muscle?
Yes, resistance bands can help build muscle. While they may not be able to match the heavy loads that free weights provide, resistance bands can still effectively challenge your muscles. The constant tension during both the concentric (lifting) and eccentric (lowering) parts of the movement ensures that your muscles are fully engaged.
Over time, as you increase the resistance and difficulty of the exercises, your muscles will adapt and grow stronger. While they might not lead to the same kind of muscle mass as heavy weightlifting, they’re an excellent option for muscle toning and building.
Benefits of Resistance Bands
Resistance bands have several advantages that make them a valuable tool in any fitness routine:
Versatility: Resistance bands can be used for a wide variety of exercises, targeting different muscle groups.
Joint-friendly: The low-impact nature of resistance bands makes them gentler on your joints, reducing the risk of injury.
Portable: Unlike weights, resistance bands are easy to transport, making them ideal for home workouts, travel, or adding to your gym routine.
Affordable: They’re cost-effective compared to buying multiple sets of weights or a gym membership.
Progressive resistance: You can gradually increase the difficulty by switching to bands with higher resistance, just like you would with heavier weights.
Are Resistance Bands Good for Weight Loss?
Yes, resistance bands can be great for weight loss when combined with a well-rounded exercise routine and a healthy diet. Resistance routines increase your heart rate and burn calories with low impact. Plus, they are perfect for high-intensity interval training (HIIT) workouts, which are known for boosting fat loss.
By toning and strengthening muscles, you can improve your metabolism over time, making it easier to maintain a healthy weight.

How to Start Using Resistance Bands
If you’re new to resistance bands, it’s easy to get started. First, choose a band that provides enough resistance to challenge you but not so much that you can’t perform the exercise with proper form. You can use them for exercises like squats, lunges, bicep curls, and shoulder presses.
Beginners should aim to perform 2-3 sets of 12-15 reps per exercise, gradually increasing the resistance as you become more comfortable.
5 Simple Resistance Band Exercises
Squats: Place the band around your thighs and perform a basic squat to engage your glutes and legs.
Bicep Curls: Stand on the band with both feet and curl the handles up, keeping your elbows close to your sides.
Shoulder Press: Stand on the band and press the handles overhead, engaging your shoulders.
Glute Bridges: Place the band around your thighs, lie on your back, and lift your hips towards the ceiling to target your glutes.
Lateral Band Walks: Step sideways with the band around your ankles, engaging your hips and glutes.
Which Is Better for You?
The choice between resistance bands and free weights depends on your goals. For most clients just starting out with me, we’ll likely use a lot of resistance support to get your muscles properly activated without lifting heavy weights (quite yet anyway).
Now remember, if you’re looking for portability, joint-friendly exercises, and versatility, resistance bands might be the best choice. On the other hand, if you want to build significant muscle mass, strengthen your bones, and track your progress more precisely, free weights could be the way to go.
Why not try both? Incorporating both weights and resistance bands into your routine can give you the best of both worlds. What’s important is getting your body active!
